Hey mum tell me… 2006
AllAboutUs FilmFactory created an educational project featuring debates around the film ‘Hey mum, tell me…” in collaboration with the ‘Koorenhuis’ (centre for the arts and culture) and the ‘Hofstadcollege’ in The Hague. The ‘Hey Mum Tour’ was aimed at bringing mothers and daughters together who come from different cultural backgrounds through the screening of our film "Hey mum, tell me". This filmic exploration of two generations of women and their self-image portrays their self-images from adolescence into adulthood. Now and later. Yesterday and today. Mothers and daughters. From old rituals nearly forgotten to rituals that are very current. Young girls, both Muslim and non Muslim are discussing their mothers. ‘Hey mum, tell me’ was made by Nisrin Ebnoulfakir, Fatma Yalcin, Precenta Turfkruier and Efza Ustuner with Anna Spohr as a coach and mentor.
“She always forgives you” Precenta says, Nisrin agrees with her and adds: “being a mother is very heavy, you should try it, even if it’s only for one day!” as she looks over to her eight brothers and sisters. Five girls shared four cameras for a few months and unravelled the dreams and wishes their mothers were not always able to have. What were their mothers lives like when they were 16? Could they also choose between a Moroccan, Surinam, Dutch or Turkish boy? And who gave them the courage to follow individual choices. Hey Mum, tell me… is an ode to all mothers.
